A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.

The purpose behind the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, according to authorities.

The Fatal Incident

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location close to the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the site managing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement stated.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the incident.

Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to come forward.

"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been following their trail to establish their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, a close relative, said the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," she said.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were ready to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the incident, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's three sons.

His Professional Legacy

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African TV network.

Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including private security, supplying high-level security services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in property management and participated in property reclaimations.

National Shock

His death has shocked the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the authorities and political parties.

A cabinet official commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.

"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my policies as a public official. He was a shining model of who we should be," was his tribute.

A political leader said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".

A media executive noted that "DJ Warras was far beyond a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought excitement and dynamism to every performance. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and quick humor, adding that his memory "will be remembered".

Context of Crime

South Africa, the continent's most industrialised nation, has one of the globally elevated homicide statistics, fuelled by property crime and syndicate wars, with some 63 people killed each day between April and September, based on official statistics.
